9 Best Camping Shovels (2024 Reviews and Guide)

A camping shovel is a vital piece to add to your camping supplies. It might not seem like a big deal but think of all the times you need a shovel for camping.

A camping shovel will be your best friend if you need to:

  • Dig a trench around your fire pit
  • Clear away an area for your tent

Why Is a Camping Shovel So Important?

There are plenty of times when you are camping that you will use your shovel. And it must make your task as easy as possible. It needs to be functional for your purposes.

While setting up your tent, clearing an area, or making minor modifications to the campsite, a good camping shovel will be handy. Digging a trench around your fire pit for safety is also essential.

camping shovelPin

You also may need to dig out the actual fire pit. For all these things, you need the right camping shovel.

Sometimes you come across unplanned events while camping, and you may need to dig yourself out of a situation. I can think of a time when we had to dig out the back tires on our truck. We were stuck in some mud. Not fun, but it would have been worse had we not had a good shovel.

Number two, we all poop. If you don’t have access to a bathroom or outhouse, you need to bury your poop. I know it’s gross to think about, but **it happens, and you need to shovel for that.

When our kids were little, they loved using the shovel to build forts, with dug-out moats or trenches around their forts. That’s how they kept out the bad guys.

What to Look For in a Camping Shovel

Size, Weight, and Portability

A good camping shovel should weigh less than 3 pounds, ideally less than 2 pounds if you are a backpacker. You will have to carry everything you take camping at some point, so consider the weight.

A shovel that folds or collapses down is pretty important. It must fit in a pack or take up as little space as possible. Our camping shovel folds down, so it fits nicely in our “tools” bin for camping.

When folded down, something lightweight and small will be much more portable than a traditional shovel in your garden shed. We are big fans of the Rhino USA Folding Survival Shovel w/Pick and the SOG Entrenching Tool.

Blade Design

The blade design is so important. It is the brains of the shovel. The material must be high quality, such as stainless steel, high carbon steel, or alloy steel. Ideally, you want a shovel that will not rust or at least be rust-resistant.

Many camping shovels are multi-purpose and have a serrated edge on the blade or a very sharp edge like a knife. Some even have a bottle opener on the side of the blade.

Handle

You want to look for a handle made of high-quality steel. It needs to be able to handle the force given when digging. Many of the camping shovels have a triangular-shaped handle that folds down for portability. These handles are easy to grab and are ergonomic to hold, making digging easier.

The multi-functional “survival” shovels usually have a long straight handle that unscrews to collapse down in 2-4 different places. So you get the benefit of having a much longer handle, but these shovels may be more than you need. Also, they come with many accessories.

Extra Features

Some of the camping shovels we listed in our post have a ton of accessories. These may or may not be necessary for your needs. They are pretty cool, though. Even if they aren’t the “survival” kind, many camping shovels come with a serrated edge on the blade.

But some even come with a sharp edge, like a knife. Others have a compass, bottle opener, whistle, hammer, and icebreaker. This is a bit overkill for me and probably most campers. If this interests you, check out the BANORES Camping Shovel.

If you are Indiana Jones or Bear Grylls surviving out in the wilderness, then I guess you might like one of these camping shovels. But for the average weekend warrior, a camping shovel that folds down is made of steel and can dig a hole will be just right.

Price

Price is always a factor. You need to be comfortable with how much you spend on your camping shovel. On the bright side, you can get a good-quality camping shovel for around $25.

Conclusion

We hope this post helped you with your decision on what is the best camping shovel for you. There are many styles, and everyone will have slightly different needs.

Some folks want a basic small, easy-to-pack shovel, while others need more features. It all depends on what you need for your style of camping.

Let us know if you have any questions. We mostly just hope you get out there and have some awesome adventures…with a great shovel.

  1. I actually plan to do a lot of camping when relocating from the UK to Poland, and never thought of the benefits of choosing the right shovel can do. A lot of these shovels look quite compact looking. The ground in Poland is very hard compared to the UK, which mainly is clay, so finding something that can deal with this type of ground and the hash cold temperatures needs to be considered. Digging holes for poop and fires is definitely on the card too The Rhino USA shovel seems to be the best choice for my situation. Would you agree? So many choices!

    • Thanks for the comment, Oliver. I know what you mean by digging in clay and other hard soil. Honestly, people don’t think about a camping shovel until it’s too late and they need to dig a hole. The Rhino camping shovel is a solid option. If you need a shovel with a longer handle for more leverage (although bulkier to carry) check out the RedCamp Military Folding Camping Shovel too. Thanks again. I hope you enjoy camping.

  9. You are right. Camping shovels are a must-have item for any camping trip. Unfortunately, I am in the market for a new shovel because apparently, I left my old one at the last campsite.

My shovel is one tool I can’t live without. They come in handy for digging trenches for your tent, leveling out your campsite, and moving dirt and rocks.

If you go camping with your dog, a good shovel is essential for burying his poop!

This shovel is small and compact, making it super sturdy and easy to pack in your camping gear.

    • Sorry to hear you left your shovel behind. The Rhino USA is a solid option for all the reasons you mentioned. Best of luck on your next adventure.
